Earthquake, Tsunami, Japan & You

How to thrive again after your personal disasterWritten by Life Coach, Nekisha-Michelle Bakre, MSW
Author of Breaking Invisible Chains, Gaining the Confidence to Redesign Your Life

Approximately 88,000 people unaccounted, babies without pampers or milk, families with no homes  and missing loved ones, 100,000 without food and water.  No money, no answers, freezing weather!  Troops and rescue workers world-wide are coming together to support those affected by the Japanese “quake”.  You may not have ever experienced an earthquake or a Tsunami physically but I know there are times when you have to overcome a personal emotional life disaster.  These types of disasters leave us feeling the same symptoms that are brothers and sisters in Japan are feeling right now.  Shaking with fear, uncertain, dismal, stagnated and wondering why?

Emotional life disasters can come as a result of a relationship gone sour, a miscarriage, a lost job, past abuse, death of a loved one or failed dreams.  No matter how big the disaster you can bounce back and here are 5 transformational methods you can use to thrive again after your personal disaster.

  1. Be bullied by determination to be happy again rather than being bullied by fear and loss.  It is easy to make excuses to avoid people places and things and to blame your life’s events on others.  However, you were born brave and it shows your power and strength as a human to allow determination forge the way.
  2. Pay attention to the lesson and allow it to grow you into a happy powerful giant.  After a painful situation it is up to you to take the remains and learn from the circumstances and figure out what to do with what you have left. Sometimes the answer is just to build again –live and not die.
  3. Create a happy place in your mind and practice filling your soul with good things that will manifest the happiness you have created in your head.  Write down what you feel will help you be productive and positive and make it your daily business to make massive happy actions. It’s also important to have the support of happy associations.
  4. Release your resentment and anger with a daily routine of prayer and gratitude.  It always helps to write what you are grateful for and to say it aloud.  The more you pray and demonstrate gratitude the faster you will feel relief and release of the negative feelings.  Negative feelings may translate to having a defensive and negative personality and prohibit you from having a harmonious quality of life.
  5. Create opportunities to share your lesson, your story, and your strength with others.  This is the best time to write that book, produce that music, open that store, start a support group or find a charity that you can lend your talents and creativity.  When you put service or charity work in place of the disaster it will provide others with admiration for you and courage for themselves.

The sting of life’s disappointments heal over-time with the right dose of optimism, focus and knowing that all things both pleasant and unpleasant work together for a common good for you. It’s also for those watching the light shining through your life.

5 Reasons He’ll Never Appreciate You

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, $2.4 billion worth of jewelry was purchased during February of last year. In addition, millions were spent on chocolates, flowers, and cards. Even then, millions of women were left standing with an empty hand or a sigh of disappointment on Valentine’s Day.

She Contributes
This type of thing happens each year, and while most people feel that it is something that the man is doing wrong, there are actually ways that women are contributing to this situation. Year in and year out, women pin their hopes on Valentine’s Day, only to come away feeling short-changed.

There are 5 main types of scenarios to which women contribute that end up helping to create this cycle of broken hearts, including:

Fantasy Island.
The man that she is with simply does not measure up to the man she has created in her head. Women often get mad at men for being who they are, instead of who the woman wants them to be.

Who’s the Boss.  In today’s world, women use power and control tactics to make it to the top of their career, but those same attitudes often kill their romance. It creates an unfortunate dynamic that can make the man feel as if he is a servant or son.

Ignored the Psychic. Many women choose to ignore red flags in a relationship, such as a lack of shared values and views. They compromise like this because they are insecure and feel a desperate need to have a man in their life rather then be alone.

Love Campaign. Some women feel they are a prize, and invest a huge amount of time, money and effort desperately trying to convince the guy that she is Ms. Right. She does this despite knowing full well that he’s not that into her in the first place. Thus she is left spinning her wheels in a tireless but ill-fated campaign for his attention and love.

Different Dictionaries. Women often feel they are the perfect match for a man, while his definition of the perfect mate is completely different but she didn’t bother to ask rather she assumed. The bottom line is she ends up being on an emotional roller coaster because he isn’t into her, and she is not “the one.”

 Keeping it Real
As women around the country analyze what happened after Valentine’s Day, some may see themselves in the above scenarios. By doing so, they can recognize that they contributed to what happened, and they can make it a goal to change the situation so by next year’s holiday they will be appreciated and celebrated not tolerated.

Stop Using “Fat” to Hold Us Back!

Stop Using “Fat” to Hold Us Back!
Written by Nekisha-Michelle Bakre, MSW
Author & Life Coach

Marie Claire’s own Maura Kelly provided a superficial observation when asked her opinion, “Should fatties get a room? (Even on TV?)” This question was her opinion about obese people making out on television as she was referring to the much talked about CBS sitcom Mike & Molly. This sitcom, if you aren’t familiar with it, is primarily about two plus-size individuals who are a couple and met at an Overeaters Anonymous group (OA).

Kelly makes the following statement, which in my opinion reckless, and among the many she espouses in her editorial. “…I think I’d be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other…because I’d be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything.”

As a life coach, I have to inspire, encourage and redesign the thinking of my plus-sized clients – who believe that they cannot fulfill their life’s dreams and aspiration because they have to wait until they lose weight. I’m sad to say that at one time I was one of them – struggling with myself, struggling with diets, and attending support groups feeling that I was not entitled to being happy. Instead my life was about being fulfilled and living my dreams based on the size of my body and it being deemed as a potential health risk.

I remember electing to accelerate my career through media and choosing radio rather than my passion to be on television because of my size. I remember allowing my business to suffer profits because I was unwilling to attend networking and social events to engage prospective clients because of my weight. I can also tell you about the countless times I blamed not having a serious romantic relationship because I felt no one would want me because of my weight. Oh, and there is the time I was forbidden to be a dancer at my place of worship because of my size.

Not being ready to live fully because of my weight are the lies I told myself and the lies my clients initially believe as we condition ourselves to agree with people like Maura Kelly. However, I became enlightened and now I enlighten others like me that the truth is that being fat is not a pass to hold back our lives, ambitions and dreams. It is not a pass to not be the stars of a nationally recognize sitcom, that by the way shares some really real issues for a culture of people whose life issues show up outwardly in the rolls around the waist and the extra padding on the hips. If we can be entertained by Celebrity Rehab and shows like Intervention then certainly America is ready for Mike & Molly.

Mike & Molly as well as Tyler Perry’s Hit sitcom House of Payne clearly demonstrates that when it comes to Hollywood – plus size individuals are worthy of more than being contestants on NBC’s The Biggest Loser or Oxygen’s Dance Your Ass Off! In fact, from a life coach perspective we can take life lessons and celebrate weight loss sheroes and heroes like Oprah, Mo’Nique, Star Jones, Roseanne Barr, Ruben Studdard and Gabourey Sidibe who did not allow their body size to hold them back from fulfilling their dreams. All I can say is hallelujah and look at them now!

So to all the Super-Star plus-size individuals, whether or not you are in Hollywood, please take to heart these points:

  1.  Be courageous and be you – live your dreams even when the odds are against you – but redesign your thinking so you can soar above the proposed limitations set by others.
  2. You have the right to be happy and fulfilled right now – you don’t have to wait for the decreasing of your body size. People can stop you temporarily but nobody can stop you permanently.
  3. You are a star, whether they agree or not. Stars shine regardless! If people don’t like what they see, politely tell them to turn the other way.

In my book, Breaking Invisible Chains, Gaining the Confidence to Redesign Your Life you will find the following words, “Living doesn’t begin until you find your way and find yourself. Fortunately, for most of us, our struggle with the things that hurt us the most connects us to the road that lead to our greater self and our divine purpose.”

So to provide a sensible and real answer to Marie Claire’s question, “Should fatties get a room? (Even on TV?) Why the hell not? Because us “fatties” will no longer be held back! Maura Kelly, we will make room, and earn room, to continue to inspire and educate those who have a limited vision about the beauty of Americans who come in all sizes and shapes.
